C o p s . - Cylindrical cops or masses of thread wound on to paper or like tubes are provided with heads 10, which prevent the thread from catching during unwinding Each head has a tubular stem 12 which frictionally engages the tube 7 and a depending flange 16 which forms, with the central stem, an annular recess for the reception of the end of the cop 6. The bottom of each recess is inclined as shown and lined with felt or other soft and yielding material 20 to prevent the thread from breaking away at the corners of the cop; the combined length of the stems is less than the length of the tube, so that, as the diameter of the cop decreases, the upper head and the cop descend by gravity and keep the cowers of the cop always in contact with the felt. To protect the thread during transport, a cylindrical shell 22 is held between the heads by the flanges 16.
