摘要
15,228. Bates, A., and British United Shoe Machinery Co. June 29. [Cognate Application, 19,450/12.] Boot - sole sewing and assembling machines; trimming; feed by awl.-A machine for lasting veldtschoen or similar shoes or for submitting the uppers of such shoes to stress prior to removal from their lasts and simultaneously stitching the out-turned flange of the shoes to the soles is provided with a chopping- knife which automatically trims the edges of the uppers as the stitches are inserted. In the combined lasting and sewing machine described in Specification 4058/12 a trimming-knife X, Fig. 1, is clamped by a bolt C3 and nut C' to the awl-carrying segment C*. The cutting takes place at a point in advance of the position at which the stitching occurs. To prevent the upper from being damaged by the action of the knife should the thread break, means are provided for stopping the feed of the work if the thread becomes slack or breaks. For this purpose, the awl C that feeds the work has its carrier pivoted on a bracket H1 projecting from a slide H moving in guides in the frame A. A second slide L adjustably connected to the feed-lever reciprocates at the side of the slide H and is provided with a recessed portion in which a projection N1 on a clutch lever N pivoted on the slide H normally engages, the lever being held in the engaged position by a light spring O. The sewing- thread is arranged to pass over a roll P2 on a spring-held rocking lever P@, the other arm of which is formed by a rod P5. If the thread becomes slack or breaks, the rocking lever P1 is lifted by its spring, and the arm P5 strikes a sharp blow on the end of the lever, forcing the projection N' out of its recess and thus stopping the reciprocation of the feed-slide H. The tensions of the springs O, P3 are so adjusted that light blows of the arm P5 on the lever N occurring during the normal working of the machine do not move the lever. To bring the awl into correct position for a full feed-stroke to be given on re-starting the machine, a projection N2 on the lever N is arranged so that it engages the end of the slide L in all positions of the lever N. The slide H is thus brought into the beginning of its feed-stroke, even though the projection N' is clear of its recess in the slide L.
