Charges, agitating and distributing.-In a roasting-furnace the ores are stirred and gradually moved along the length of the furnace by transversely reciprocating rabbling-devices. In the arrangement shown, the stirring and transfer of the ore along the furnace in the direction of the arrow X is effected by V-shaped teeth or scrapers S carried by a reciprocating framework g. The apparatus is cooled by the circulation of a liquid or gaseous cooling-medium, preferably air, and the sections i carrying the teeth are detachably secured to the framework g at points immediately opposite the working openings e. A. single long tooth-carrying bar, or a number of sections, as shown, may be employed, and in the former case removal openings are provided in the ends of the furnace. The framework is reciprocated by racks and pinions and is guided by rollers. To prevent undue accumulation of ore, the furnace is rounded off where the walls meet the hearth.
