Compartments.-Ships are formed with a series of transverse watertight bulkheads 2, and pipes 3 are provided connecting each compartments in one half of the ship with the corresponding compartment in the other half, so that in the event of one compartment being flooded, the corresponding compartment is also flooded and the ship is maintained on an even keel. The pipes may be fitted with valves, and means may be provided for flooding any compartment.
