Cauldrons.-Consists in forming rotary drums for heating asphalt with a cross - section like a ratchet-wheel, as shown in Fig. 2, the steps c forming the lifting-plates for the material being disposed radially and provided with perforations which may be opened and closed while the machine is in motion for the purpose of discharging the material as required. This is accomplished by sliding plates e having perforations which are moved into or out of register with the perforations of the plates c by projections f engaging one or other of the sides of a forked lever g pivoted at h. The drum may also be fed or discharged through hollow trunni ns k, which may be provided with perforated plates m, n. When the machine is used for mixing asphalt, stone, and sand for road material, heat is applied and the closed drum rotated until the mixture is sufficiently hot. When old asphalt is reheated, new asphalt or oil is also added to make up any deficiency. In a modification, the lifter plates c are disposed tangentially to an imaginary cylindrical surface co-axial with the drum.
