4764. Stoddard, F. Feb. 25. Road-contouring apparatus.-Apparatus of the perambulating type for recording the "fall" of land, or the horizontal distance between two points comprises a rotatable disk driven from the road wheels, and a tractor wheel bearing on the disk and rotating a shaft, the position of the wheel on the disk being determined by a pendulum. For recording "fall", a disk a is mounted in a casing b suspended from the top rail c of a bicycle-like machine. A rotatable shaft j is mounted in the casing b parallel to the top bar c, and carries the first wheel k of a recording-train, and is rotated by a tractor wheel o bearing on the disk a, and free to slide along the shaft j. As the inclination varies, the wheel o is moved across the disk a by a slotted cross-bar m sliding in guides, and traversed by a slide block p on a pendulum l. For measuring horizontal distances, the pendulum carries a perpendicular arm on which the slide block p is mounted, or the shaft j is perpendicular to the top rail c, and the cross-bar moves parallel to the rail c.
