Hydrocarbon oils, cracking; bulk evaporators. -Oils are cracked by heating with anhydrous aluminium chloride, ferric chloride, or other metallic chloride at temperatures not higher than the end boiling-point of naphtha (400‹ F.) when that product is desired, or the end boiling- point of illuminating-oil (600‹ F.), when that distillate is to be obtained. The temperatures used are about 325-350‹ F. in the case of naphtha, and 550-600‹ F. in the case of illuminating-oil. The cracking is effected in a still A fitted with stirring-blades E, E1, the lower blades carrying depending chains F. Splash plates G are fitted to the shell of the still.
