Fire-bridges. - To consume smoke in steamboiler and like furnaces, air for combustion is heated, before entering the furnace, in tubular passages of particular form arranged behind and in connexion with the fire-bridge. In the furnace shown in Fig: 1, air from the ash-pit passes through openings in the back-plate of the bridge controlled by a damper d to a number of airheating elements b of flattened curved tubular form which are inclined, as shown in Fig. 4, have sharp edges b1, and are of the cross-section shown in Fig. 5. The air passes from these elements to a chamber a in the bridge and escapes to the furnace between the tapered ribs r of a grating arranged at the top of the chamber a. Instead of admitting air to the elements b direct from the ash-pit, it may be supplied to them by separate passages arranged within or outside of the ash-pit. A door k is provided for the removal of soot &c. deposited in the chamber a.
