860. Price, H. L., and Cartwright, G. J. Jan. 12. Smoke, preventing; air, supplying; firebridges.-Relates to means for supplying air and for promoting secondary combustion in boiler and other furnaces. In the water-tube boiler furnace shown in Figs. 1 and 3, a conduit H above the furnace door supplies air through openings H', H2, &c., which increase in size from the inlet end, where there is a valve I, to the far end in order to obtain an even distribution. The total area of these openings is equal to the area of the conduit H, which is about 1/300 of the grate area. In the bridge M is an air passage N which has similarly-arranged openings; it is controlled by a valve I and is of about 1/500 of the grate area. A portion of the unconsumed furnace gases is drawn off by tubes J, K and delivered by graduated openings L', L2, &c. in a tube L behind the bridge, where they ignite and. inflame the unburnt gases passing over the bridge. The valves I are formed, as shown in Fig. 5, with a rotary hit-and-miss plate having openings I5, which are about 3 1/3 of the area of the air conduit. In the twin-flue marine boiler shown in Figs. 10 and 13, a U-shaped air-supply pipe HH is secured to the dead-plate G2, having an air-supply valve I at its ends and openings HH1, HH2, &c. increasing in size to the centre of the pipe. A passage N in 'the bridge has openings N', N2, &c. increasing in size to the centre, air being supplied to it by tubes O in the ash-pit, at the ends of which are valves I.
