638. Bailey, J., and Manifoldia, Ltd. Jan. 9. [Cognate Application, 723/14.] Associating, perforating, and gumming apparatus. - In the manufacture of manifold books or stationery from cut sheets of paper, the original and duplicate sheets are fed to a machine at different points into separate thread control paths and, while under the thread-control, are collated and have one or more of the operations of ruling, numbering, perforating, gumming, and printing performed upon them. The machine may be used for collating three or more sheets by passing the previously collated two or more sheets and an additional sheet through the machine. In the machine shown in Fig. 1, the sheets are fed either by hand or automatically at the points a, a' and are conducted through the machine by threads 1, 2, and 3, 4. The sheet fed at a passes round an impression cylinder b, on which it is ruled in one or more colours by a ruling-device c, and numbered by a numbering-cylinder d, and thence between cross-perforating cylinders f, g and longitudinal perforators h. The sheet fed at a' is similarly ruled, numbered, and perforated by the devices c1, d1, f1, g1, and h1 and meets the first sheet at the roller k. The feed of the sheets is timed relatively to the numbering or like mechanisms by the gate mechanism described in Specification 28,690/13. To prevent interference with the cross-perforating mechanism, the threads 1, 2, and 3, 4 are carried round the cylinders f, g, and f1, g1 as shown. The perforators h, h1 may be of the kind described in Specification 23,113/12. The machine shown in Fig. 2 is specially adapted for the manufacture of ' two-in-one ' stationery, in which the original and duplicate sheets are gummed together at one edge and also perforated adjacent to that edge for subsequent separation of the sheets. The sheet fed at n is ruled and numbered by the devices p, q and passes between a printing couple r, s for printing the manufacturer's name or other matter on the edge which is subsequently torn off. The edge of the sheet is then gummed by a roller t. The sheet fed at n1 is numbered by the device q1 and may be ruled and meets the gummed sheet at the roller u, from which the sheets are carried together by the threads 1, 3 between the perforating-wheels x to the delivery.
