Locating sounds.-In a method of determining a ship's bearings by observing the time of travel of sound signals from one or more fixed stations, such as lighthouses, sound-transmitting apparatus at the lighthouse is put in action by a wireless signal from the ship. For this purpose, the wireless receiving- circuits s1, Fig. 1, are connected to a magnet 11, which operates a valve 14 (or alternatively closes an electric circuit) to supply power to the bell or other audible signal mechanism, at the same time lifting a detent from a drum 15 by which the signal mechanism is normally locked. The key which controls the ship's wireless transmitter may be arranged to operate the starting-button of a chronometer. The lighthouse may also have means for transmitting a wireless signal at the moment when the bell is operated, the bell-striking mechanism being provided with contacts for opening the wireless receiving-circuit and closing a transmitting-circuit.
