6004. Vickers & Sons, B. R., Vickers, B. T., and Lebeda, A. J. March 10. Packing, compound metallic and non-metallic; cup-leather packing; stuffing-boxes, substitutes for.-Propeller and like shafts are protected against corrosion by enclosing them in a cylindrical and telescopic easing provided with packing which is not dependent upon endlong compression for tightness. The casing D, Fig. 2, enclosing the shaft A is bolted to the stern tube B and slides within a recess in the propeller boss C, a cover-plate F keeping the packing G in place. In the modification shown in Fig. 4, two sleeves D2, D3 are respectively bolted to the stern tube B and boss C so as to have relative axial movement, a packing G3 being used to complete the joint. In another form, a sleeve D‹, Fig. 6, is used in addition to the sleeves D4, D5, packing G2 in the form of a split spring ring being employed. The sleeve D6 may rotate with the shaft A or be free thereon, it may or may not have endlong movement, and may be grooved to allow lubricant to pass from one end to the other. The packing-ring in one form comprises an annular frame L, Figs. 13 and 16, with projections L2 or complete cross-bars, the series of recesses or pockets being filled with cork, fibre, or other packing M.
