7588. Alfaro, J. E., and Stone & Co., J. March 25. Dams and stoppings.-A safety door for mines &c. comprises a cylindrical cell e fitting against a seating secured around an opening in the bulkhead &c. b, such cell being fitted with a door or cover 1 and being rotatable only in the direction in which the hinge of the door is in advance. The seating comprises vertical side bars and segmental top and bottom bars q, q1, mounted upon a supporting- frame and pressed forward by adjustable springs ; the seating-bars comprise strips of vulcanized fibre, copper, or soft metal s bent around stiffening-bars t of gun-metal or brass. The cell is rotated by worm gearing 11, 8 operable from the exterior of the cell by a shaft 12 furnished with handles 14, and from the interior by a handle 18 on a shaft 16 connected to the shaft 12 through gearing 21, 22, 20, 24, 23. A pawl 27 engaging a ratchet-wheel 26 on the shaft 12 ensures rotation of cell in the one direction only. The cell is arrested when the door 1 registers with the bulkhead &c. opening by a spring bolt 30 carried by the cell engaging with a pivoted catch 29. The bolt 30 is releasable from within the cell and the catch 29 from without. The cell is adjustably mounted in bearings k, d, and is forced against the seating by screws. The boss h on the upper end of the cell may be fitted with an air-tube 28 through which electric lighting telephone, or signal wires can be passed.
