8863. Brookman, S. G. G. April 8. Actuating; liquid-seal valves.-In an automatic liquid-seal and thermal control device for regulating the supply of gas to gas-heatec boilers, urns, &c. the vessel a, Fig. 1, containing the mercury x is mounted in a chamber k fitted with the water inlet and supply pipes m, l, the one m, having a filling funnel m1, Fig. 3 this apparatus is disposed at the top of the boiler or urn. A screwed plunger h for adjusting the mercury level, and concentric gas inlet and supply tubes e, d are fitted in the top oi the mercury vessel. When the liquid in the boiler or urn reaches boiling-point, the heat of the steam escaping through the pipes l, m expands the mercury which rises and gradually covers the taper slot g in the inner tube c. The reduction of the supply of gas continues so as to maintain the liquid just at boiling-point. The introduction of cold liquid through the funnel m1 and the chamber k immediately contracts the mercury and restores the full supply of gas until the liquid boils again.
