Indicators actuated by pressure of head of liquid.-Relates to apparatus for indicating and recording the variations in the level of the sea and for similar purposes, of the kind comprising an inverted U-tube or its equivalent, one limb of which is filled with water or other liquid and dips into the sea, and the other limb is partly filled with mercury and communicates with a mercury chamber in which is a float carrying a recording-pencil, and consists in the combination with a tube communicating at one end with a mercury chamber and at the other end with the sea, of means for introducing into the tube a liquid which will not readily freeze or mix with the water. In the apparatus shown, the equivalent of a U-tube is formed by eccentric tubes g, n, of which the outer tube g is screwed into a cast-iron base p and is in communication with a mercury chamber h in the base, and the inner tube n passes through the base and is connected to a pipe dipping into the sea. The inner tube and a part of the outer tube are filled with a non-freezing liquid, such as a mixture of tetrachloride of carbon and kerosene, which is introduced by withdrawing air from the top of the tubes through a tube l and pouring the liquid into the bottom of the outer tube through a U-shaped passage v in the base. The bottom of the tube opens into a mercury chamber m acting as a seal. The top of the tubes is closed by a removable bell glass 3. Rods of different diameters are provided for insertion in the tube g to vary as desired the scale of reading of the apparatus.
