Carding-engines; lap-forming apparatus. - To form a fleece of kapok or like fibres, the material is collected upon a toothed drum 1 and is smoothed by the action of a flexible piece 4 of card clothing, one end of which is secured to the frame of the machine. A backing of muslin, thin paper, or wire (woven or not) is applied to the cylinder 1 prior to the deposition of the fibre thereon, so that when a sufficient quantity has accumulated, the cylinder may be rotated in the reverse direction and the fleece drawn off on the backing. The backing may remain as a permanent attachment to the fleece, or may be detached, the fleece being placed on another suitable backing, or between layers of material, or be treated on one or both surfaces with mucilage &c. A removable roller 6 may be used to press the backing into the teeth of the drum 1 as it is applied thereto, the casing 7Î being hinged to allow the roller to be applied.
