Vapour engines.-Energy is taken from a source of natural or waste heat by means of a solution which undergoes a cycle of thermal operations in a closed-conduit circuit wherein the effusion of gas from the solution at one part of the cycle is effected solely by the heat of absorption at another part of the cycle. The energy is utilized in a prime mover for doing work, or for refrigerating or warming purposes. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the gas effused in the generator a, which may, for example, be charged with hydrous ammonia and ammonia gas under about seven atmospheres pressure at normal temperature, is utilized in a motor c, the exhaust of which passes to a heating-coif e in a chamber f which is traversed by a current of air, water, waste furnace gases, or exhaust steam. The device c, f may be arranged to operate in stages in the lower of which brine or equivalent liquid may be used as a source of heat in those cases wherein the reduction of temperature in the cylinder is sutiicient to bring about the formation of snow. The warmed gas then passes to a controlling-device g, to which weak solution is passed from the generator through a pipe h. The gas and solution pass to an absorption chamber or coils j in the generator, wherein the heat of absorption causes further effusion of gas. From the chamber j, the mixture is forced by a pump l through a heat-exchanger n, wherein the weak solution passing through pipe h is cooled, and passes finally to a saturation-chamber or coil o wherein the absorption is completed. The pipe d may lead directly to the controlling-device g and the heating-coil e placed between the pump l and the exchanger n. Or heating-coils may be placed in both places. In a modification, the gas is expanded instead of being used in a motor, and the mixture passes directly from the pump to the saturation chamber o. The exchanging-device containing the pipe h may be used as a warming-element.
