Respiration, appliances for promoting.-Apparatus for restoring the apparently drowned &c comprises a compressor for periodically forcing a charge of oxygen or air, or a mixture thereof into the lungs, and means for alternately allowing free exhalation due to the natural elastic recoil of the lungs &c. In one fnrm, Figs. 1 and 2, a piston pump a is connected by an intake pipe b with a gas-bag d provided with a valve-controlled air inlet d3 and an oxygen inlet d'. The delivery pipe c of the pump is connected with a face mask f, which is of the type described in Specification 23,021/13 and is fitted with tongue forceps g. The mask is also fitted with an exhalation pipe h, the outlet of which is controlled by a valve i which slides in a tubular guide and is raised by a spring-controlled trigger l on the piston-rod a' during the suction stroke of the pump. A trippiece and stop m adjustable on the guide limits the stroke of the piston and releases the valve i, so that it drops and closes the exhalation tube during the delivery stroke of the pump. Fig. 5 shows a modification, in which the piston pump is replaced by a bellows.
