Gauge glasses and the like.-A screw-down lift valve, particularly applicable for use in water gauge-glass fittings, is fitted with a readily removable valve seat and with means to prevent leakage past the actuating-screw. The valve seat 10 is formed on a ported sleeve 6 provided with a square hole or cross-slot to enable it to be ground in and held against a shoulder in the casing by a screwed cap 8. The cap 8 is internally threaded to receive the actuating- screw 15, which is connected to the valve spindle by a pin-and-slot mechanism to allow a slight grinding of the valve during the opening and closing movements. To prevent leakage past the actuating-screw, a washer is secured to the end of the valve casing and is adapted to be compressed by a flange on the actuating-screw when the valve is opened.
