Turning.-Articles such as handles of firebrasses, shanks of watch-chain swivels, gas cocks, &c. are turned by a formed tool worked in relation to the work during cutting so that only a portion of the tool-edge is operative at any one time. A slide g2 and rack i, Fig. 1, are set to an angle corresponding to the mean line y, Fig. 2, of the profile to be turned. A cam and linkage motion, shown in part at g4, traverses the slide g and at the same time rocks the shaft e carrying the cutter d, by means of the pinion h. The slide g1 is set up to give a series of cuts after each or after alternate oscillations of the shaft c. The profile, when too long for a single tool, may be dealt with by two tools arranged in different planes. The rack and pinion may be replaced by linkage. Shaping curved surfaces.-The tools are made from a bar k in a shaper, for example the one shown in Fig. 3. After each cut, the shaper head is traversed a step by the handle p, the holder for the bar being rocked by a rack-andpinion motion similar to that used in the lathe. The tool l has the exact profile that the lathe tool is required to reproduce.
