The mercury sludge formed in the production of acetaldehyde by passing acetylene into acid solutions of mercury salts is regenerated either by heating it until the impurities are carbonized and metallic mercury is obtained, or by mixing it with caustic alkali solution and electrolyzing it to yield metallic mercury; the mercury recovered by either of the above methods is reconverted into the appropriate salt for further use.
