An Improved Process of Tempering or Tempering and Cleaning Copper.

Tempering.-Copper, in the form of plates, ingots, bars, rods, or strips, is tempered, and in some cases cleaned, by heating it to a red or white heat, immersing it in a bath, allowing it to remain there until a hissing sound is produced, then placing it on a hard surface and hammering it while covered by a second hard surface until the red glow of the copper gives place to a golden tint. The bath contains lime water, and may also contain tallow; and when used also for cleaning the copper, borax, or vegetable matter, such as an infusion of burdock. or both, may be added.
