Mechanical telegraphs.-The signal indicators of a mine or like signalling system are re-set automatically when the winding-engine is started or stopped, by means of a commutator driven from the engine shaft and arranged to break the circuit of an inductance, thereby sending a surge of current through a magnet controlling the resetting-circuit. The coils of the inductance A are in circuit with the battery g, commutator D and brush f, contact n, and armature l; and an electro-magnet B is placed in shunt across the inductance A. When a signal is sent either mechanically or electrically, a magnet C is energized, withdraws a latch h, and allows a spring m to swing the armature l against the contact n. If the brush f is in contact with a conducting- segment of the commutator D, the magnet B and inductance A are energized, but the armature l is not sufficiently attracted to overcome the spring m. When, however, the engine starts, the circuit of the inductance A is opened, and the induced electromotive force fully energizes the magnet B, which attracts its armature l, closes the resetting-circuit q at the contact o, and cancels the signal. If the engine is running when the signal is given, the quick succession of makes and breaks at the commutator does not allow the current through the inductance A to build up until the engine has almost stopped, the action then being as described above.
