Torpedo screens.-A screen for ships against torpedoes, mines, and su marines comprises a fringe or fringes of steel &c. plates c' hanging from floating-cylinders or pontoons c at the ends of hinged booms d and a. powsprit a. The cylinders are hollow and watertight and may be packed, or not,with cork &c. The plates may be hung in a single row centrally under the floats, or at the sides in a double row, as shown in Fig. 7, or both, to form a triple fringe. For the bow and stem, each plate c1, Fig. 9, may be separately suspended from a float cylinder, as shown, the cylinders being arranged in stepped order. The cylinders are lashed together and attached by ropes &c. to floating tubes or logs extending from the bowsprit to booms on each bow, and on which the outer ends of these booms &c. are supported. The bow and stern plates may alternatively be suspended from pontoons c, as shown in Fig. 1, the plates c1. however, being arranged parallel to the fore and aft line of the ship. The bowsprits a is hinged at a1, counterweighted at b, and provided with a girder stay b1 for raising and lowering. The booms may extend from independent tubes or logs arranged to float close to the vessel's sides which are protected therefrom by fenders.
