Mechanical telegraphs.-Rotary shafting and gearing for mechanical telegraphs is constructed so that it may be erected in position without previous essay for the determining of exact lengths, angles, &c. Self-contained units comprising boxes 14, bevel wheels, and stump shafts 20 are attachable to suitable supports, such as the .bulk-heads of a ship, and the shafting 2 may be connected to the stump shafts 20 by longitudinally movable sleeve couplings 22. A universal joint 24 may be provided, and also disconnecting clutches, intermediate expansion couplings, and intermediate bearings, which may be water-tight, for the shafting 2.
