A Process for the Manufacture and Production of Potassium Aluminate, Alumina, and Potassium Carbonate.

A mixture comprising specified proportions of calcined bauxite or like aluminous substance, potassium chloride, calcium hydrate and carbon is heated in a muffle to dull red heat and submitted to the action of the vapour of arsenic trioxide. The charge from the muffle is lixiviated with water yielding a solution of potassium aluminate which may be treated with carbon dioxide to yield a precipitate of aluminium hydroxide and a solution of potassium carbonate. The potassium carbonate solution is evaporated to dryness. ALSO: A mixture comprising specified proportions of calcined bauxite or like aluminous substance, potassium chloride, calcium hydrate, and carbon is heated in a muffle to dull-red heat and submitted to the action of the vapour of arsenic trioxide. The charge from the muffle is lixiviated with water yielding a solution of potassium aluminate which may be evaporated to dryness and obtained as such p or may be treated with carbon dioxide to yield a precipitate of aluminium hydroxide and a solution of potassium carbonate. The aluminium hydroxide is washed, dried, and calcined, yielding alumina, and the potassium carbonate solution evaporated to dryness.
