Detachable propelling-installations; propelling and steering by paddle-wheels.-Canal barges &c. are fitted at the stern with a detachable installation comprising an internal-combustion engine geared to a pair of paddle-wheels mounted to both drive and steer the vessel. The vertical shaft e, mounted in a footstep bearing n and geared as shown to the shaft of the motor h, forms a pivot for the swinging frame m in which is mounted the shaft c of the paddle-wheels a, b.
