Leakage, stopping.-Fig. 1 shows a device for use in drilling holes in submerged bodies in which the drilling-tools are contained within the device and are driven by a compressed-air motor. The device consists of a vessel 1 the open end of which is closed by a diaphragm. 4 held in place by a ring 5. The space outside the diaphragm communicates with the space inside by a pipe 6. The vessel is placed on the body to be drilled, and the water contained in it is expelled through a pipe 8 by means of compressed air supplied by a pipe 7. The water pressure then holds the device in position, a joint being made by a ring 10. The drill cuts through the diaphragm which is renewed when the device is used again. In one modification, the compressed-air motor is replaced by an electro-motor, and in another the drilling tools are supported on the outside of the device. As shown in Fig. 4, a number of these devices may be employed to hold a stopper 13 over a hole in a ship's side. The stopper is held in place by a wedge member 15 driven between it and transverse members 14 secured to pairs of the vessels 1. In the modification shown in Fig. 6, the vessel is made of U-section and is secured to the damaged plate in the manner shown. 73
