Vats, arrangement and construction of; transferring liquids between vessels; agitating skins in vats.-Vats for soaking, liming, tanning, chroming, leaching, and like treatment of hides &c. are arranged with a central dividing partition d having its upper edge below the surface of the liquid and an opening or openings d' at the bottom. The liquor is caused to circulate by air or gas forced through pipes c, a valve i being so arranged as to pass the air into one vat or the other, thus reversing the direction of flow of the liquor at will. The opening d1 can be more or less closed by a shutter e. The liquor is adapted to be withdrawn and transferred to a trough t above the vats, whence it may be distributed to other vats or discharged upon the hides in the same vat. By means of a valve q the liquor may otherwise be emptied into a chamber n and out at a drain n'. In a modified form of apparatus, a double partition is employed, the liquor circulating between the walls thereof from and to the vat on each side. An air-discharge pipe located beneath the partition facilitates this; a rotary air nozzle is described. The hides &c. are hung from hooks on the vat sides or from laths g formed concave on the upper side and resting on battens f. The laths carry hooks g' for engaging the hides and hooks g2 taking over lifting-bars j whereby the whole pack of hides can be raised from a vat and conveyed on a runway. The plant may be used for treating substances used in tanning.
