摘要

130,787. Hancock, H. H. Aug. 13, 1918. Printing - surfaces; ruling - appliances.-An apparatus for marking a sheet of paper with lines at right-angles, for use in positioning printing-formes in relation to margins or for locating lithographic transfers on a mounting slieet, comprises two marking-devices or sets of marking-devices movable in directions at right-angles to each other, each marker being adjustable laterally of its direction of movement so that the position of the points of intersection of the lines on the sheet may be widely varied. As shown, an imposing plate 22, secured in an opening 21 in a table 20, is covered by a sheet 24 of canvas or other soft material to form a yielding surface to receive a sheet 221 of paper to be marked. The sheet 221 is placed in position against front and side gauges 103, 104, 105 which are adjustable along grooves 106, 107 in the table 20, and the sheet is then clamped by means of the heads 89 of pins 90, Fig. 20, which are held in clamping position by springs 92 and are raised simultaneously to release the sheet by cams or eccentrics 95 on shafts which are geared together. Two sets of marking- devices 49, 86 are mounted on shafts 36, 83 carried by carriages 32, 82 mounted for movement along rods 28, 27 arranged at right-angles to each other. The sets of markers and their carriers are of similar construction. The carriages may be turned about the rods 27, 28 when the markers are not in use. The shaft 36 is rotatably mounted in the carriage 32, and is provided with a handle 38 by which it can be turned so as to hold the markers out of contact with the paper, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4, or in contact therewith, as shown in full lines. Stop-lugs limit the turning movement in both directions. The marking-devices preferably consist of toothed disks 56, Fig. 16, carried on shanks 55 of collars 54, Fig. 12, mounted on the shaft 36. The collars are adjustable along the shaft and are guided thereon by the engagement of lugs 69 with a groove 65 in the shaft. The lugs are formed on pins 70 pressed downwardly by springs 74. Any of the markers may be held in an inoperative position by lifting the pins 70 and turning the collar until the lug 69 engages with a second groove 66 in the shaft 36. A series of nicks are arranged across the groove 65 corresponding to graduations on the shaft 36. and the inner end 81 of a lever 76 is adapted to engage one or other of the nicks to hold the collar in adjusted position. The marking-disk 56 may be mounted on either side of the shank 55 or with either face in engagement with the shank, and is rotatably mounted on the hollow hub 58 of a disk 57 which is secured by a disk 63 carrying a stud 64, and a screwed pin 61. The marking-disk is yieldingly held in contact with the paper by a spring 60. In order to smooth the paper in advance of the marking, a rod 97 is arranged at an angle to the shaft 36 and carries a coiled smoothing-spring 101 attached at its ends to collars 98, 99 looselv mounted on the rod 97. In use, the marking-disks are adjusted in accordance with the size of the pages to be printed and the widths of the margins, and the shaft 36 placed adjacent to the clamped edge of the sheet 221. The handle 38 is then operated to press the marking-disks and smoothing-springs into contact with the sheet, and the carriage is moved along the rod 28 to make one set of markings. The other markers 86 are then operated similarly to effect the other set of markings. The marked sheet is then printed in the press and the impressions compared with the markings to ascertain what adjustments of the formes may be necessary. The sheet may be printed before being marked by the apparatus. When the apparatus is employed for locating lithographic transfers on a mounting sheet, the markers may be inked.
