Graces; air, supplying; blast apparatus; fuel, feeding; ash-pits.-In a furnace provided with a chain grate, an air chamber 14, Fig. 1, is provided beneath the upper run of the grate, to the front end of which air is supplied by steam-jet draught-inducing apparatus or by blowers. The top of the chamber 14 is open, except for the bars 24 which support the links of the grate. The links 2, Figs. 5 and 6, are flat at the top and are inclined at the sides and ends, to which the air has free access for cooling purposes. The links are connected by pins passed through holes 40 in the lugs 3. The lower traverse of the grate hangs slack, so that the ends of the links, on their return movement, feed ash and the like along the plate 6 to the shoot 7 at the front of the furnace. Fuel is fed on to the grate from a hopper 10 provided with an adjustable slide 11 to regulate the supply of fuel. An arch 13, Fig. 3, arranged inside the hopper serves to distribute the fuel and allows an inspection door 12 to be fitted to the front of the furnace. Fig. 2 shows a steam jet 18 arranged within a nozzle 19 provided with a distributing-baffle 20 for supplying forced draught to the chamber 14. The steam-supply pipe is connected to a tubular hinge-pin 16 of a door 17, so that, when it is desired to open the door for removing ashes &c., it will not be necessary to break any steam-pipe joints. An air-supply pipe 21 admits air 'behind the bridge 22.
