Mowing - machines.-A lever e imparts oscillating motion to bevel toothed wheels a, b, which are connected by through bolts j, and are supported on gudgeons f, f1 projecting from a sleeve g surrounding the shaft h to which continuous rotary motion is to be imparted. Pinions c, d secured to a sleeve m on the shaft h have oppositely-disposed partial sets of teeth extending for less than half their circumferences. In operation, the wheels a, b are stopped at the end of an oscillation by the bolts j entering recesses l in the sleeve g, the toothed parts of the pinions cross from one wheel to the other, and are picked up and driven in the same direction as before by the next oscillation. The sleeve m drives the shaft h through a ratchet clutch o, n. A uniform speed of oscillation is obtained when the oscillating members are driven from the rotating shaft. An application of this arrangement to the cutters of mowing-machines is described.
