Discharging.-One or more bars 6 are reciprocated in the direction of their length over the hearth 5 of a vertical kiln to break up and discharge the contents. The bars are toothed, and may be provided with transverse scrapers 10. Where two bars are employed, they may move in opposite phases and with different amplitudes, obtained by shifting the crank-pin of the driving mechanism in the slot 9, or in other ways. The hearth 5 projects at the sides sufficiently to prevent spontaneous discharge of the contents of the kiln; it may be formed as a grate in place of the solid hearth shown.
