137,616. Roe, A. V. Jan. 27,1919. Hoods.-A hood for automobiles &c. comprises a rigid or rigidly-framed canopy 6, 8, a rigid streamlined auxiliary section 10, and a flexible or folding awning 9 attached to the members 8, 10, the member 10 being adapted to be attached either directly to the canopy 8, with the awning folded, as shown in Fig. 7, or to a supporting-frame 4 with the awning 9 extended. The awning is extended by detachable longitudinal struts comprising pairs of telescoping members 11a, 11b extended by springs 31 and fitting under lips 32 of plates 24 secured to the members 8, 10, the struts being flanged at 26. Transverse stretchers 42 of flanged U-section may be provided, these stretchers being secured to the awning 9 and resting on flanges 43 integral with, or secured to, the flange 26. The rear edge of the member 10 engages under a lipped member 14 on the canopy 8, and the meeting edges of the members 8, 10 are formed with interengaging grooves 12, 13, these members being secured by means of a slotted plate 16 and wing- nut 18. An adjustable socket member 35, sliding in a slot 38 in the member 10, is secured to an upstanding projection 34 on the frame 4 by means of a screw 40, the socket member 35 being secured on the member 10 by a lock-nut 39. When the member 10 is secured directly to the canopy 8, the awning 9 is folded and may rest on a shelf 44 linked or flexibly connected at one end 47 to the canopy and provided at the other end with a cross-bar 48 removably supported on brackets 49. The upright panels 6 of the canopy 8 may be removed, and the members 8, 10, secured together, may be attached to the rear top portion of the vehicle body, thus covering over the rear seating spaces.
