Purified phenolic resins obtained from the crude condensation products of phenols and aldehydes by successive washing with hot water, dilute mineral acid, and cold water, may be dissolved in alcohol, acetone, amyl acetate, &c. to form varnishes or lacquers; by adding dyestuffs they give preparations suitable for finishing fabrics.ALSO:Purified phenolic resins are obtained from the crude condensation products of phenols and aldehydes by successive washing with hot water, dilute mineral acid, and cold water. The products are converted into insoluble products by heating to 100 DEG C., or they may be dissolved in alcohol, acetone, amyl acetate, &c. with or without addition of mineral colours to form varnishes or lacquers; or by adding dyestuffs they give preparations suitable for finishing fabrics. The purified phenolic resins combine with bases, such as lime, baryta, iron oxide, &c. or with polyvalent alcohols such as glycerine, or with mixtures of bases and glycerine; the resulting products are hardened by heating to 100 DEG C. Examples are given of mixtures of the purified resin with aluminium hydrate, or with glycerine and ferrous hydrate.
