Indicators, applications of.-Comprises means for measuring water impacts on the hulls or floats of flying-boats, seaplanes, &c. when landing on, rising from, or moving through the water when the waves are high. The under surface of the hull or float has fitted into it a tube a in which slides a piston b with a very limited movement. The piston is provided with a hole e through which is passed a pin d fixed to the tube a. The travel of the piston is determined by the clearance between the pin and the hole, and is of the order of # th to 1/64 th of an inch. The piston is pressed outward by a spring f so that the end is flush or slightly proud of the end of the tube, which is flanged and shaped to interfere as little as possible with the flow of the water. The tension of the spring may be adjusted by a block h having lugs sliding in slots in the tube a to prevent rotation, such block being moved by a screwed sleeve i from a head k. A rod g passes from the piston through the spring and sleeve and is adapted to make an electric circuit and cause a record to be made when the blow exceeds the pressure of the spring and moves the piston upwards.
