Rumbles and tumbling-barrels.-The processes of shaking, blueing, and cleaning nails, tacks, &c. are carried out in the same apparatus, which comprises a rotatable cylinder with means for directing a series of high-pressure gas jets within it and means for inducing a blast of air through the cylinder. The cylinder 1 is rotatably mounted on rollers 2, one pair of which is driven from the pulley 5. Longitudinal baffles 16, which may be disposed radially or inclined at any suitable angle, are attached to or near the inner surface of the cylinder. The tacks are introduced through an opening normally closed by a lid (not shown) until their level is just below the tube 6. The cylinder is first rotated to free the tacks of needle points formed in manufacture on their shanks. After the blueing process, the cylinder is again rotated and a blast of air is induced through the aperture 10 by means of a fan 13 to remove swarf, scale, and dirt and for polishing. A fixed or detachable cup-shaped grid 16a perforated round its sides prevents the tacks from escaping into the conduit 12. A shutter 17 disconnects the fan during the heating process. The tacks are discharged into one or more hoppers on the lid being opened when brought to the bottom by means of a hand-operated crank, &c. According to one Provisional Specification, the drum has a second series of baffles, forming with the baffles 16 a series of V-shaped elements; and means are provided for rotating the drum in the reverse direction.
