Surface condensers.-In an air-cooled and evaporative surface condenser, the tubes are arranged in sections in which straight rows of tubes are separated by straight passages for air, &c., and the sections are arranged with the tube rows of one section in line with the air passages of adjacent sections. Steam, entering at inlet A, passes downward through the tubes of a group of four sections C to header D, then up a group of three sections E, and down a group of two sections G. Air is forced through the condenser by a propeller U and evaporative liquid is sprayed into it at the entrance to the group C and into the spaces b, c between the groups. The tubes may be arranged vertically or inclined and may be of flattened cross-section. Alternatively, the air may be passed through the tubes and the steam through the passages between them.
