Fish culture; oyster culture.-A method of purifying edible shellfish, particularly mussels and oysters, consists in the application of hypochlorites and/or chlorine dissolved in sea-water of a strength which will interfere with the vital processes of the shellfish. As an example, cleaned mussels are placed on racks on the floor of a shal. low concrete or other tank, and sea-water is circulated through the tank, a filter, and an electrolyzer. The amount of chlorine produced is indicated by an ammeter calibrated for parts per million of chlorine. When the electrolyzer is in indirect circuit two small feed pipes lead into a sea-water circuit and a fresh water circuit respectively, and the chlorine in the latter circuit can be estimated by a standard chlorometer. After adjusting the feed pipe to this circuit, the readings of the chlorometer serve for determining the strength of chlorine in the sea-water. Chlorine gas or bleaching powder may be used.
