A process for the treatment of nickel-copper matte comprises converting the matte until the greater part of the nickel is reduced to metal, treating a portion of the matte with acid in the presence of air, precipitating copper from the solution by means of another portion of the matte, recovering the nickel from the remaining solution, roasting the undissolved residues of the dissolving and cementation processes, leaching the resulting copper and nickel oxides with acid, reducing the undissolved oxides to metal and recovering the precious metals therefrom.
