An improved method of, and means for, dishing steel and like plates

Power hammers; cupping.-Steel and like plates for ship or boiler construction are dished to any desired shape while cold, by making a large number of indentations between a rapidlyreciprocating tool and a hollow die, larger than the tool. The plate is laid on a die 13 having a central aperture, and receives repeated blows from a tool 11 provided with a head 12, of considerably smaller area than the aperture, the whole area of the plate to be dished being so treated. The tool is supported by a carrier 1, sliding in a guide 2, and having trunnions 5 projecting through slots 6 in the guide, which receive .slotted links 7 actuated by a rapidly rotating eccentric. The edge of the aperture in the die is preferably rounded. To vary the stroke of the tool, the latter is attached to the carrier by packing-strips of different thicknesses, inserted through an opening 18 in the carrier and a long slot in the tool.
