Dams; retaining-walls.-Pipes b with non-return valves are placed through a dam or wall c at the side of a tidal water course, with their ends a in a depression g in the bed of the water course so that at high tide masses of earth which collect at g are pressed up the pipe into the region d behind the dam or wall. Non-return valves are fitted in other parts of the dam to allow water pressed into the region d to be returned to the river.
