Automatic ventilators for the prevention of draughts caused by disturbed air and wind in the interiors of private and commercial cars or vehicles, and for the ventilation of interiors and the like
189,012. Ford, E. L. Jan. 17, 1922. Ventilators.-A ventilator for preventing backdraught in motor and other vehicles comprises an exit aperture for the draught in the roof or hood, a deflector 3 depending from the back edge of the aperture inside the vehicle, and means such as a flap valve 4 for preventing air entering through the aperture. A number of forms are described, that shown in Fig. 3 comprising a pivoted deflector 3 and a flap valve 4 of convex shape, so that the flow of air produces a negative pressure at the rear edge tending to keep it open. A plate 5 may be provided in front to increase this action, and a plate 6 at the rear to prevent back flow of air. Side shields 19 may also be provided. The flap-valve, which may be counterweighted, may be flat and provided with external vanes so positioned that side or rear air currents act on them so as to keep the valve closed. Fig. 5 shows a form in which a hood 12 is mounted over a flat valve 4 to create a negative air pressure at the rear ; in modifications the valve is hinged to the rear edge of the hood, or the rear part of the hood is curved down to the level of the roof opening and hinged to the front part to form the valve. A wind-directed cowl may be substituted for the valve. When fitted to the hood of a vehicle the various parts of the ventilator are formed in sections and hinged to one another so that they may fold with the hood, Fig. 11 showing a deflector plate formed of sections 15, 17 with insertions of suitable material 16 between them.
