Brakes, counter-pressure.-In order to use the engine of a motor vehicle as a brake, it is provided with a special non-return suction valve which is locked in its closed position during normal running. The valve-box 6 is connected by a passage 11 with one of the engine cylinders, and carries a spring-loaded non-return valve 8 which can be locked on its seat by a screwed plug 16 having a handle 21 within easy reach of the driver. The plug 16 has an axial passage 17 with a transverse port 22, which communicates with the atmosphere through a port 23 in the valvebox when the plug is screwed home against the valve 8. When the plug is unscrewed it first releases the valve 8 to admit air on the suction stroke and unseals the end of the passage 17 so that air compressed in the cylinder can escape through the port 23, but as the plug is still further unscrewed this port is throttled and is finally sealed by the movement of the port 22 past it. Thus by adjustment of the plug any desired braking effect can be obtained.
