Electromagnetic and m e r c u r y switches; latching and unlatching.- Relates to thermostats for controlling the temperature of electric or hot water radiators or heating and cooling apparatus of the type comprising a double U-tube A, A1, Fig. 1, containing expansible fluid co-operating with a two solenoid relay which is provided with a. locking-device and controls an electric switch. Maximum and minimum terminals b1, a1 and an intermediate terminal c1 in the U-tube A1 are connected in circuit with mercury cups y1, y2 Fig. 3, contacts S, S1 on a rocking-arm R, and solenoids J, K for the purpose of rotating a shaft O controlling the main switch. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the solenoid core L has a pin M engaging a slotted arm on the shaft O, which carries at its other extremity a rocking arm T with contacts V for completing or breaking the main electric circuit. In order to hold the solenoid core L in its extreme positions against vibration, small pivoted hooks e controlled by solenoids W, X arranged in series with the solenoids K, J respectively are adapted to co-operate with catches d on the solenoid core. The double U- tubes, relay solenoids, and rocking arms R, T are preferably all mounted on a single stand.
