192,155. Williams, O. R., and Williams, D. D. Oct. 26, 1921. Arresting-grips or friction apparatus on permanent way.- Spring-pressed cheek rails which are connected to the running rails for stopping or retarding railway vehicles, are made in short lengths so that each wheel of the vehicle separates the cheek rail and the retarding effect is thus in part due to the work done in stressing the springs. Several methods of mounting the cheek rails are described. As shown in Fig. 1, the cheek rail 3 is directly connected to the running rails 2 by a bow-shaped spring 1, a wedge-block 4 being added if desired to adjust the stress of the spring. As shown in Fig. 5, the cheek rail 3 slides upon the rod 8 against the spring 14 the compression of which can be adjusted by the nut 15 with locking-pin 16. In another arrangement the web of the cheek rail is substantially vertical as in Fig. 1 and this rail slides upon a rod such as 8, Fig. 5, which is however pivoted to a bracket to which the running rail is secured. Figs. 8 and 9 show the cheek rail hinged to the running rail by brackets 19, 20, the spring 29 acting in tension. Adjustment of the pressure of the spring is effected by a screw 30a mounted on a part integral with the bracket 19 and engaging one end of the spring. In another form, the cheek rail is hinged by brackets 19, 20 and a compression spring is mounted upon a rod pivoted to the cheek rail and sliding through a guide-member integral with the bracket 19. Fig. 10 shows the cheek rails hinged at 32 to the running rails and acted upon by spring rods 34 which can be rendered ineffective by moving the plate 33 against which the rods abut. The plate can be actuated by point rodding or by a gate wheel machine or lever machine. Specification 29904/12 is referred to.
