Mules and twiners.-The long lever 4 is provided with a vertical rod 5 sliding in guides and provided with adjustable fingers 6, 7, 8 respectively to disengage the twist catch lever 14, to disengage the roller clutch, and to disengage the lever 25 which holds the belt on the loose pulley 28. Near the end of the outward movement of the carriage a projection 36 on the carriage engages a lever 37 and through the rod 31 and lever 38 operates a spring-controlled lever 41 and disengages the back shaft clutch 32. The outer end of the long lever 4 then drops and through a link 29 lowers a catch lever 30 into engagement with a projection 311 on the rod 31 and locks it in position with the back shaft clutch open. The inner end of the long lever 4 rises and the finger 6 raises a lever 13, releases the twist catch lever 14 from the projection 17, and allows the belt 18 to be moved on to the loose pulley 28 and the backing-off friction 20 to be moved into engagement. The belt is locked on the loose pulley bv the catch 251 on the lever 25. The finger 7 operates a spring lever 23 and disengages the roller clutch box 24. At the end of the inward run the long lever 4 is moved in the opposite sense. The link 29 is raised and the rod 31 released from the catch lever 30, whereupon the spring 313 moves the rod and closes the back shaft clutch. The rod 5 is drawn downwards and the finger 8 moves the lever 25 and releases the belt fork 27, thus allowing the belt to move back on to the fast pulley. The movement of the fingers 7 and 6 respectively allow the back shaft clutch to be re-engaged and the twist catch lever 14 to re-engage the catch 7. The carriage also strikes the lever 43 and opens the taking-in friction 421 through a rod 431 and spring lever 44. If the mule is provided with a motion for twisting at the head or with a jacking-motion and twist-motion the finger 6 is omitted from the rod 5, the twist-motion releasing the lever 14.
