198,743. Lever, H. E. March 2, 1922. Animal traps.-In a breakback trap of the kind in which the break-back bar has a cranked portion acted upon by a spring which is released by an animal treading upon a pivotal platform, the whole of the tripping-mechanism is concealed beneth the base, of the trap. The bar E, which is made from a single rod, has a cranked portion D and is pivoted in the down-turned sides of the metal base A. A spring F connected with the part D and the end Q of the base, which end is V-shaped in plan, tends in the set position to turn the crank D upwards. Pivoted at H is a platform B occupying a hole in the base A and pivotally carrying at K a trip rod C which is pressed against the undersurface of the base A so that the end R becomes a fulcrum. An animal treading on the platform B thus forces the crank D down so that the line of action of the spring passes below the pivots of the bar E, enabling the spring to force this bar down on to the platform. The downward and upward movements of the platform B are limited by stops, and the position of the spring F may be adjusted up and down the end Q, which has a slot through which the end of the spring passes. In a modification the end R of the rod C has a V-shaped portion in order to make the trap more sensitive.
