Gas analysis; burettes and pipettes.-In a portable apparatus of the Orsat type for the complete analysis of coal gas and like combustible gases, (1) the burette is centrally placed to reduce errors due to the capillary; (2) the graduation and the dimensions of the burette are selected with a view to enabling a comparatively large portion of the gas to be taken for explosion; (3) both water and mercury are used as confining agents, the explosion occurring over mercury in a vessel having a shape and dimensions stated to reduce the speed of the explosion; and (4) the capillary is of ¢ mm. bore. (1) The burette M is connected to the middle one of the seven branches leading from the capillary C, and is centrally placed with respect to the absorption pipettes PI P2, P3, and the explosion vessel X. (2) The bulb at the top of the burette has a capacity of 70 cc. and is graduated in ¢ cc.; the stem portion has a capacity of 50 cc. and is graduated in 1/20 cc., the final reading of 120 cc. being just above the lower cork of the waterjacket J. (3) The water reservoir WL operates the absorption pipettes P1, P2, P3, but the explosion vessel X is operated by means of the mercury reservoir ML. The operation of the apparatus is described.
