Recording music; transcribing-scales.-Music played on a piano or organ, including all the shades of tempi thereof, is recorded with the aid of pedals by an electromagnetic device utilizing red potassium ferricyanide. Depression of the keys a, b, Fig. 1, allows contacts d to drop and make contact with a bus-bar e1 fixed longitudinally over the keyboard brackets f and set-screws g. The bar e1 may be in sections adjustably connected together to allow of use in instruments in which the width of the keys varies. The contacts d are connected by a cable to electromagnets u arranged in rows at an angle to the direction of travel of the record strip, thus enabling the width of the latter to be reduced. Energization of an electromagnet u attracts an armature j pressing a marking-point n against the paper and completing an electric circuit, including a plate k1 and the armature j and point n, through the paper and the bottom of a detachable tank l. The record paper coated with red potassium ferricyanide is drawn from a delivery-roll R1, over a guide-roll R2 through water in the tank l, and thence by rolls R3, R' underneath the bottom of the tank. The two pedals of the piano, or two specially provided pedals on the organ, are utilized to mark the rhythm and standard tempo by means of contacts carried thereby, the right-hand pedal completing the circuits through two of the electromagnets u, thus obtaining a double mark indicating the first beat in a bar, and the lefthand pedal completing the circuit through one only of these two electromagnets, producing a single mark indicating the subsequent beats of the bar. The transcribing-scale consists of a slide movable by hand in a guide through which the record is passed, the slide having one edge inclined at an angle corresponding to the inclined arrangement of the electromagnets, being marked with divisions bearing the names of the notes, and co-operating with a fixed scale of note-values.
